Mullis, Dr. Kary B.

San Diego resident Kary Mullis is co-winner of the 1993 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his invention of the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), a process that permits the replication of DNA in a short period of time. DNA fingerprinting, DNA sequencing, and genetic disease diagnosis are among the many results of his discovery. A PhD in Biochemistry from UC Berkeley, he is also known for some unconventional views (among them that AIDS is not caused by HIV) and his love of surfing. It is probable that we will hear about both from this most unusual Special Guest.
